Ellon Youth Crit races

UPDATE _ FRIDAY 2/9/2011

THE RACE IS NOW FULL - NO MORE ENTRIES PLEASE.

Only a few days left till the 2nd Ellon crit race. This year the races are youth cats A,B,,C, D & E only and we are delighted that so many competitors have travelled from north and south to race in Ellon.

At time of writing this I have 48 competitors taking part.

Here are the details for competitors;

Here are the details for marshals and helpers;

TBA

Here is a wee film of the course taken a few weeks ago.

There will be prizes kindly donated from Paligap, Holburn Cycles, Alpine Bikes and Cycle world. All the donations were specifically given to promote youth cycling in the area. The prizes will be given out as a mixture of race winners and spot prizes.
In addition all the riders will receive a commemorative medal

The races could not go ahead without the considerable support of Simon Hailey who organises the pedal car race and the local council who agreed to close the roads for us. We realise that the closed roads does cause some disruption to local residents and businesses but we hope that having such an event in Ellon more than makes up for the inconvenience.

In the afternoon the closed roads are given over to the pedal car race. Will last years winners in their new car be victorious once again or can the talented, but less experienced, Ythan QL (in last years winning car) take the spoils. Or will the threats issued by “The Pilots” come to the fore, Is there a new car being built secretly in a back shed somewhere in rural Aberdeenshire show up and take the winners flag?

Stick around to find out!

Blair's London to Paris ride

Fresh from his impressive exam results Blair is taking some time out with his Dad to cycle from London to Paris in aid of Diabetes UK. His picture was in the Ellon Times (In full Ythan kit ;-)

You can sponsor Blair at:
Blair & Bobby McClymont pedal to Paris

In September, 17 year old Blair McClymont and his dad Bobby are setting out on a fundraising venture for the charity Diabetes UK. They have signed up to cycle from London to Paris, by a 200 mile route, over 3 days in early
September 2011.

Blair is a 6th Year pupil at Ellon Academy and is Deputy Head Boy. He is also one of the 10 pupils in the school who gained 5 “A” passes at Higher in the 2011 SQA Exams and he is planning to apply to study Medicine at university.

He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was 5 years old and a Primary One pupil at Meiklemill School. Since that time in January 2000, Blair has been given excellent support by the Children’s Hospital at ARI, by Ellon Health Centre and by staff at his two local schools.

His medical support has been backed up by his sporting activities in football with Formartine and Ellon Meadows Boys Clubs and in hockey by the Academy and Ellon Mens Hockey Club. He also plays saxophone in the Aberdeenshire Saxophone Orchestra, has taken exams in Classical Guitar and plays guitar in the local rock band “State of Emergency”.

Blair joined Ythan Cycling Club 2 years ago and is a regular participant in their events.

His dad, Bobby, will accompany him in cycling from London to Paris, the second time that the retired headteacher has tackled this event in support of Diabetes UK. Bobby was Headteacher for 13 years at Bridge of Don Academy before his retirement in 2007 and then was a part-time teacher in Ellon Academy’s Support for Learning Department for 3 years, completing 40 years as a teacher.

The attached photograph is being used to publicise their venture and is being circulated to friends and family. It carries details of the procedure for donations to Diabetes UK – similar to the justgiving.com website, but cutting out the agent and ensuring all of each donation goes to the charity.

Simply search the internet for diabeteschallenge.org.uk
Then in the search box of that page type in: Blair & Bobby Cycle London to Paris

Blair and Bobby have paid already paid the full cost of the trip so that all the money we raise will go to the charity. They hope that you can help support Diabetes UK.

Diabetes UK supports research into treatments and a possible cure for diabetes.
2.8 million people in UK have been diagnosed with diabetes and researchers estimate that up to 850,000 people have the condition but do not yet know it.

A good day for DM

On Saturday DM managed to sneak a 10 win against CA by 9 seconds at Forres. Not only that he was recognised in Forres as last years pie eating champion.

Ythan two up too wet

This evenings two-up TT had to be cancelled due to the standing water on the lower half of the loop and the incessant rain meant that visibilty was poor, especially for the following rider.

So we all had a cup of tea and some cake :-)

The Granite City team turned up in their new charabanc.
From their parking it looks like they are trying to oust Fiona for a position on the Paracycling team

Ellon crit cricuit video

Yesterday evening there was a wee lull in the torrential rain so Robbie and I went out with the video camera to film the circuit for the Ellon crit races.

Sorry about the squint helmet camera and the music was Robbie's choice ;-)

Youth race update and two-upmanship

Alpine bikes have generously donated prizes to the youth events and have paid for medals for all the riders.   Entries have started coming in for both events. It’s a good chance to get some Skinny Tyre points on the table so we are expecting a good field.

Remember next Wednesday evening is the Ythan 2-up. Get yourself a friend and TT together!
